Reducing Project Duration
In your own words, describe crashing, fast tracking, and scope reduction as means of schedule compression. When would each be appropriate? Which methods would you consider better first-choice methods by most project sponsors? Would any of these methods apply to Agile projects? How does Agile address schedule compression?
Let’s take a couple of scenarios. We are going to talk about the PM’s contingency budget tonight. That is the excess (10-15%) the PM has planned as a “fudge factor.” I probably look at things differently if I have one month left in a 4 month project versus being 1 year into a 6 year project. There are a lot more unknowns if I have another 5 years to go. The question then becomes “Do I want to spend my reserve now or later?”…
